Congo Ebola Outbreak Surpasses 6,000 Cases, 2,911 Deaths

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the country's largest on record, with health authorities reporting on Monday that confirmed cases have surpassed 6,000 and deaths have reached 2,911. The epidemic, driven by the Bundibugyo virus strain for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists, has spread rapidly across six provinces since it was declared in mid-May. According to the latest government figures, the outbreak has now affected 60 health zones, with the epicenter in Ituri province, which accounts for the majority of cases.
