Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney Defends Roster After LSU Blowout

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney faced pointed questions Tuesday regarding his team's roster construction following a lopsided 51-10 season-opening loss to LSU. Chapel Fowler of The State newspaper asked Swinney if he had any regrets about how the team's roster was built during the offseason. Swinney responded by questioning the timing of the inquiry, stating, "I regret being 0-1 right now. ... Can you ask me that at the end of the season? The season ain't over. We've got one game down. What if we go 11-1? You promise me you'll ask me that then? I'll answer it. But I'm not answering questions like that." He further elaborated that such questions are more appropriate at the end of the 12-game season, especially when facing a team as strong as LSU, which he acknowledged as potentially the best in the country. Swinney's approach to roster building has historically differed from many other Power Four programs, with a reduced reliance on the transfer portal. In the 2025 offseason, Clemson brought in a program-high of four transfers, and this season, that number increased to 15, a significant jump from zero just two years prior.
