Clearlake nears buyout of Boehly and Walter stakes in Chelsea

Published 11 September 2026

Clearlake Capital is close to finalizing agreements to buy out the minority stakes held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in Chelsea Football Club, a move that would consolidate the investment firm's control and value the Premier League team at approximately £5 billion. The potential transaction, which has been in discussions for some time but intensified recently, would see Clearlake increase its ownership from 61.5% to over 85%. A spokesperson for Mark Walter confirmed he is seeking a sale with an agreement close, stating the deal would value his stake at a premium to his initial investment. "This potential transaction values Mark Walter's stake in Chelsea Football Club at a premium to his initial investment and is another successful sports investment for him," the spokesperson said. "After this exit, Mr. Walter intends to make future sports-related investments." The spokesperson added that Walter did not initiate the proposed transaction. Boehly, who served as chairman and was the public face of the 2022 takeover, is also expected to sell his 12.8% stake. Neither Boehly nor Clearlake has publicly confirmed an agreement.
