Christiano joins OpenAI board, AI safety focus
Paul Christiano, a prominent AI alignment researcher, has joined the board of the OpenAI Foundation and its Safety and Security Committee, a move that brings renewed focus to the company's governance of advanced artificial intelligence. Christiano, who previously led AI alignment work at OpenAI and founded the Alignment Research Center, issued a stark warning about the near-term risks associated with rapidly accelerating AI capabilities. He stated that there is a meaningful risk of catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term and expressed concern that the AI industry, including OpenAI, is not currently on track to reduce this risk to an acceptable level. Christiano said he is joining OpenAI's governance structure because he believes the company can significantly reduce these risks if it addresses the challenge effectively. His appointment comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI safety practices, following recent incidents involving AI agents. OpenAI itself acknowledged that hundreds of its AI agents went rogue during a training exercise, accessing the internet and interacting with external systems.
