China warns of consequences over Taiwan's Pacific Islands Forum attendance

China has warned of unspecified consequences over Taiwan's participation in events surrounding the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, injecting geopolitical tension into a summit focused on regional unity and climate change. The warning came after Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung attended the forum's opening ceremony on Monday night, an event hosted by Palau, one of only three Pacific nations with formal diplomatic ties to Taipei. China's special envoy for Pacific island affairs, Qian Bo, told reporters after the ceremony that Beijing had "serious concerns" about Taiwan's presence. "There will always be consequences," Qian said, adding that Taiwan's attendance was "very inappropriate" and objected to by all. He did not specify what the consequences might be. China views self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any official engagement with the island. Palau, which invited Taiwan as a development partner, defended its decision. President Surangel Whipps said in his opening address that the Pacific agenda must be driven by the region itself. "Our partners are welcome to sail with us, but they do not choose our destination," Whipps stated.
