China postpones Chang'e 7 lunar water ice mission

China has postponed its ambitious Chang'e 7 lunar mission, which was scheduled to launch as early as August 24, 2026, from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province. The China Manned Space Agency announced the delay on August 23, stating the mission "does not meet the launch conditions" and cannot proceed during its planned window this year. The decision was made following a comprehensive assessment based on principles of "prudence, reliability and absolute mission success," according to an official statement. The postponement was attributed to unfavorable weather conditions. Tropical Storm Narra, with winds of approximately 45 mph, was active in the South China Sea near the launch site. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, which contributed an instrument to the mission, confirmed the delay was caused by the storm. The institute explained that the specific launch window for a lunar south pole landing requires precise sunlight alignment, and a delay of even a few days would push the next suitable window by at least a month.
