China Mudslide Kills 3, 9 Missing

Torrential rains brought by Typhoon Saudel triggered a deadly mudslide in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, eastern China, resulting in at least three confirmed deaths and nine people still missing. The disaster struck early Saturday, September 5, 2026, engulfing villages and destroying approximately a dozen homes. Search and rescue teams discovered one missing person dead among collapsed houses on Sunday morning, September 6, according to state broadcaster CCTV. The mudslide occurred after days of heavy rainfall from the typhoon, which had made multiple landfalls in China, including in neighboring Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. The wave of mud and floodwater inundated several villages, including Shixia, Mingkeng, and Gaoping. Footage shared on social media networks depicted floodwaters carrying debris and damaging structures. Officials reported that 640 search and rescue workers were deployed to the affected areas. In response to the danger, over 5,300 residents in Suichuan County have been evacuated to safer locations. Power has since been restored to the area.
