China injects 360B yuan into banks, insurers

Published 7 September 2026

China's Ministry of Finance announced on Sunday, September 6, 2026, a significant capital injection totaling approximately 360 billion yuan (US$53.6 billion) into state-owned insurers and banks. The move is part of a coordinated effort to shore up the nation's financial system and enhance its capacity to serve the real economy. The Ministry of Finance will fund these injections by issuing 300 billion yuan in special bonds, a financing tool previously reserved for state-owned banks. This initiative marks the first time special bonds have been used to support insurers, extending a mechanism that had previously bolstered other major state banks in 2025. Among the insurers receiving capital, China Life Insurance Group is set to receive 35 billion yuan, while China Taiping Insurance Group will get 7 billion yuan. Peoples Insurance Company Group of China plans to raise up to 15 billion yuan through a private placement to the Ministry of Finance. China Export and Credit Insurance Corp will receive 10 billion yuan, and China Reinsurance Group noted it will raise 3 billion yuan.
