China injects 360 billion yuan into financial sector
China's Ministry of Finance is injecting 360 billion yuan, approximately $54 billion, into eight major state-owned banks and insurers to bolster their financial health amid a slowing economy. The capital infusion, announced on Sunday, September 6, 2026, aims to strengthen the institutions' balance sheets, enhance their capacity to lend to businesses, and support investment in the stock market. The majority of the funds, about 290 billion yuan ($37.2 billion), is designated for banks. The Agricultural Bank of China is set to receive up to 160 billion yuan ($20.5 billion) and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China up to 100 billion yuan ($12.8 billion) through private share placements, with the Ministry of Finance among the investors. Notably, the state-run China National Tobacco Corporation is also participating in these placements. The remaining 70 billion yuan ($9 billion) is allocated to insurance companies. China Life Insurance Group, the country's largest life insurer, will receive 35 billion yuan ($4.5 billion).
