China Inflation Accelerates in August
China's consumer and producer prices saw a slight acceleration in August, official data revealed on Wednesday, though overall inflation remained subdued amid persistent weakness in domestic demand. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that the consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.8% year-on-year in August, an increase from the 0.5% recorded in July and aligning with economists' expectations. This figure has remained below Beijing's target of 2% for over three years, experiencing negative territory multiple times during this period. The sluggish domestic spending, a challenge since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, contrasts with strong performance in export and high-tech sectors. The producer price index (PPI), which measures prices at the factory gate, also picked up pace, increasing by 3.8% year-on-year in August. This acceleration surpassed July's 3.5% and exceeded the forecast of 3.6%. Officials attributed the rise in both consumer and producer inflation partly to elevated energy costs, influenced by global supply risks and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
