Chelsea sign Ahanor from Atalanta for £40m, loan to Palace

Chelsea have completed an agreement to sign Italian defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, with the 18-year-old set to join the club in 2027 after spending the upcoming season on loan at Crystal Palace. The deal, confirmed by both clubs on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, is understood to be worth approximately £40 million, with some reports citing a package including add-ons that could reach £48 million. Ahanor will not immediately move to Stamford Bridge due to Premier League regulations that prevent a club from loaning more than one player to the same team in a single season. Chelsea have already loaned French defender Axel Disasi to Crystal Palace for the 2026-27 campaign. To navigate this rule, Ahanor will remain formally registered with Atalanta for the duration of his loan at Palace before completing his permanent transfer to Chelsea next summer. The young defender joined Atalanta from Genoa in July 2025 for a reported fee of around £20 million. He enjoyed a strong debut season in Serie A, making 35 appearances across all competitions and scoring one goal.
