ChatGPT Plugin Adds iMessage Integration for Mac

OpenAI has launched a new plugin that integrates its ChatGPT artificial intelligence assistant directly with Apple's iMessage app on macOS, enabling users to read, search, and send text messages through the chatbot. The feature, announced on August 20, 2026, represents a significant expansion of ChatGPT's capabilities into a core Apple communication platform. The plugin is available to users of ChatGPT Work and Codex on Apple Silicon Macs. According to demonstration materials shared by OpenAI, it allows the AI to analyze message threads, summarize conversations, draft replies, and send texts on a user's behalf. Examples provided include using the assistant to suggest follow-up messages based on received texts, scan messages for upcoming birthdays to add to a calendar, or identify potential spam for deletion. Activation requires several steps, including adjusting privacy-related settings in the Mac's System Settings and granting the ChatGPT app contact and automation permissions. OpenAI states the integration runs locally on the user's machine and does not create a centralized index of all messages.
