Charlotte Church criticizes Sheeran over Macklemore’s removal

Welsh singer Charlotte Church criticized Ed Sheeran during a performance in Cardiff, accusing him of prioritizing commercial interests over taking a stronger public stand after rapper Macklemore was removed from Sheeran’s US tour. Church also urged the audience to chant “Free Palestine.” Church made the remarks at the Depot during a performance with her Pop Dungeon project. She said Sheeran’s wealth and large audience gave him a platform to do good, then accused him of choosing consumerism and capitalism over what she considered the right course. She also rejected the idea that musicians should avoid political issues, telling the audience that politics is part of life. The criticism follows Macklemore’s removal from the remaining support dates on Sheeran’s Loop tour. Macklemore had voiced support for Palestinians and performed his protest song Hinds Hall during shows in New Jersey earlier in September. The performances drew objections, and tour promoter Messina Touring Group said venues had told it that concerts would not proceed with Macklemore on the lineup. Sheeran has said the promoter made the decision, not him.
