Carter Turns $427 NCAA Penalty Into Cancer Fundraiser

Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter has pledged to donate $427 for every tackle he makes this season, a figure directly linked to the NCAA penalty that sidelined him for the season opener. The initiative also includes donations for sacks, forced turnovers, and defensive touchdowns, with proceeds benefiting cancer research and patient support. Carter's pledge emerged after he faced an NCAA suspension for an impermissible benefit. Following his junior season, Carter declared for the 2026 NFL Draft and signed with an agent. The agent paid $427.48 for a flight to an NFL predraft training facility. However, Carter aggravated a foot injury during training, requiring surgery. He withdrew from the draft on January 16, 2026, and fully repaid the $427.48 for the flight. Despite repaying the money and self-reporting the issue, the NCAA ruled it a Level III violation. Initially facing a three-game suspension, appeals by Tennessee reduced the ban to one game. Carter missed the Volunteers' 56-9 season-opening victory against Furman on September 5, 2026, but is eligible to return for the remainder of the season. His first game back is scheduled for September 12, 2026, against Georgia Tech.
