Carrick says Shaw omission precautionary before derby

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Luke Shaw's absence from the Champions League squad against Sabah FK was a precautionary measure, as the club manages the left-back's workload ahead of Sunday's Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford. Shaw, 31, was substituted in the closing stages of United's 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend after coming off with cramp. He missed Wednesday's open training session at Carrington, which Carrick described as an extra recovery day rather than a sign of a persistent problem. The defender was then left out of the matchday squad for Thursday's Champions League opener against the Azerbaijani side, which United won 4-0. "It's a little bit of that managing him. He came off the other day at Everton with a little bit of cramp. We didn't want to take any risks really," Carrick told TNT Sports before the Sabah fixture. Speaking earlier in the week, he added: "We just gave him an extra recovery day today. We will see by tomorrow how he is but it is not an ongoing thing or plan or anything like that off the back of the game the other day.
