Carney launches Canada investment summit with C$1 trillion target
Prime Minister Mark Carney opened Canada's first national investment summit in Toronto on Monday, presenting a 167-project prospectus with a five-year goal of catalyzing C$1 trillion in investment. The summit, co-hosted by CPP Investments and PSP Investments, brings together about 300 CEOs and senior executives from major global investment firms, who collectively manage more than C$100 trillion in assets. The C$1 trillion figure is a policy target, not committed capital. Officials stated that roughly C$280 billion in public capital and incentives is intended to help enable more than C$1 trillion from government, private, and institutional sources. The summit is not expected to produce a rush of deals this week, with a Canadian official indicating the most significant results are likely to emerge over the next 12 to 18 months. The event occurs amid a trade dispute with the United States. Trade talks collapsed on August 21, after which President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods, and Canada retaliated. Washington subsequently announced bans on some Canadian imports and moved to exclude Canadian products from large, long-term U.S.
