Car attack in Caen leaves one dead, 10 hurt

A man deliberately drove a car into a crowd of pedestrians near a train station in the French city of Caen on Wednesday night, killing one person and injuring 10 others, according to local authorities. The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. local time in the Normandy region, following what police sources described as an argument or fight at a nearby bar. The driver, identified as a 26-year-old Russian national, allegedly struck pedestrians on a public road opposite the city's railway station. Local prefect David Clavière confirmed the casualties, stating that one person died, seven were in critical condition, and three sustained minor injuries. All of the victims were reported to be men aged between 17 and 40. Authorities said the suspect fled the scene after the incident but was apprehended about 20 kilometers away in Ouistreham. He was taken into custody and is not known to intelligence services, though police had previously dealt with him for traffic violations. The prosecutors' office in Caen confirmed the suspect's age and nationality. An investigation has been launched into potential charges of murder and aggravated assault.
