Canadian Runner Missing on Matterhorn Search Continues
Canadian mountain runner Kalie McCrystal has been missing for six days after disappearing during a training session on the Matterhorn on September 1, 2026. The 38-year-old from Squamish, British Columbia, was last seen descending the Lion Ridge toward Cervinia, Italy, after reaching the summit of the 4,481-meter peak. An extensive search involving Italian mountain rescue services and the Guardia di Finanza is ongoing, but no sign of the athlete has been found. McCrystal was attempting to set a speed record for climbing and descending the Matterhorn via its Italian route. According to her family and Athletics Canada, she was an experienced skyrunner and mountaineer with extensive knowledge of alpine terrain and had climbed the Matterhorn before. The training session was described as a purposeful, high-level conditioning exercise to understand her physical capabilities ahead of a formal record attempt. She had been preparing in Cervinia and had already conducted reconnaissance on the mountain, including a successful solo ascent and descent of the Swiss Hörnli Ridge on August 14, 2026, in 6 hours, 47 minutes, and 33 seconds. The disappearance occurred under challenging conditions.
