Canada Explores New EU Associate Member Status Amid US Trade War

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is exploring a new "associate member" status for Canada with the European Union, a move driven by a severe and escalating trade war with the United States. According to multiple reports, the EU is open to creating this new category of membership, which does not currently exist, to allow for deeper economic and strategic integration. The initiative aims to reduce Canada's heavy dependence on the U.S., which receives two-thirds of Canadian exports. Officials from both sides are discussing ways to let Canadian goods, services, and workers move more freely within the EU in strategic sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, defense, and critical minerals. The talks also include joint infrastructure projects, including laying underwater cables, building data centers and cloud storage facilities, and developing new satellite networks. Carney has been in regular contact with several EU leaders, most notably French President Emmanuel Macron, about the possibility of allowing Canadians to live and work in the EU without needing a visa.
