ByteDance secures $29.6 billion loan for AI
ByteDance, the owner of popular social media platforms TikTok and Douyin, has secured a $29.6 billion syndicated loan, marking one of Asia's largest corporate financing packages this year. The substantial funding, coordinated by Citigroup and JPMorgan, is intended to fuel the company's significant investments in artificial intelligence and expand its data center capacity, particularly outside of China. The loan, which drew participation from nearly 30 banks across China, the United States, Europe, and Singapore, saw overwhelming demand from lenders, pushing the final amount well beyond ByteDance's initial target of approximately $20 billion. Chinese banks subscribed to more than 60 percent of the total loan. This financing package is the second-largest dollar borrowing in Asia in 2026, surpassed only by SoftBank's $40 billion facility arranged in March to support its investments in OpenAI. While ByteDance has stated the funds are for general corporate purposes, sources familiar with the deal indicated that the majority is expected to support the company's ambitious AI initiatives.
