Burnham to meet Trump at UN amid efforts to reset UK-US ties

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to meet US President Donald Trump for the first time in person this week, a meeting government ministers are framing as a crucial opportunity to reset UK-US relations despite past personal criticisms. The encounter will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, marking a significant diplomatic moment for Burnham since taking office in July. Labour chairwoman Bridget Phillipson dismissed Burnham's previous sharp criticisms of Trump as simply "politics," asserting they would be "no bar to having a strong relationship." Speaking on Sunday, Phillipson emphasized that the transatlantic alliance transcends individual leaders. "We don't have the same political outlook, but the relationship between the UK and the US goes beyond any one president, any one prime minister," she said. The two leaders have spoken twice by phone since Burnham became prime minister, but this will be their first face-to-face conversation. The agenda is expected to cover several sensitive topics, including the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East, and the UK's recent trade ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements.
