British sitcom star Richard O'Sullivan dies at 82

Richard O'Sullivan, the beloved British actor known for his roles in popular 1970s sitcoms, has died at the age of 82. He passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026, surrounded by his close family at Brinsworth House, a care home for former entertainers in Twickenham, west London. O'Sullivan had been a resident at Brinsworth House for 23 years, having moved there following a stroke in 2003. The Royal Variety Charity, which runs the home, announced his passing, stating they were deeply saddened by the loss of the "legendary and much-loved British actor." He became a household name for his portrayal of Robin Tripp, a student chef, in the groundbreaking sitcom "Man About the House," which aired from 1973 to 1976. The series was considered daring for its time, depicting a man sharing a London flat with two single women. O'Sullivan reprised his role in the spin-off "Robin's Nest," which ran from 1977 to 1981 and followed his character as he opened a bistro. His character in "Man About the House" also served as the inspiration for John Ritter's Jack Tripper in the American sitcom "Three's Company.
