British Columbia marks Overdose Awareness Day amid ongoing crisis

Published 2 September 2026

Communities across British Columbia marked International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, 2026, with vigils and events to remember the more than 18,000 people who have died from the toxic drug crisis since it was declared a public health emergency over a decade ago. The gatherings, held in cities from Hope to Kelowna, combined personal remembrance with calls for expanded support services and a shift away from stigma. In Hope, the Community Action Team organized an event at Hope Memorial Park featuring an exhibit of 68 pairs of shoes, each representing a life lost to toxic drugs in the community.
