Brisbane Lions complete three-peat with late grand final rally

Brisbane Lions overturned a 17-point deficit in the closing minutes to beat Fremantle 96-89 in the Australian Football League grand final on September 26, securing a third consecutive premiership. The Lions scored four goals late, with Logan Morris putting them in front in the final minute, to claim a seven-point win before 100,023 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The result completed Brisbane’s second premiership three-peat, following the club’s run of three titles from 2001 to 2003. Fremantle, playing in its first grand final since 2013, was seeking its first AFL premiership. The Dockers had led for much of the second half and held a game-high 17-point advantage with a little over four minutes remaining. Brisbane began its late rally with a goal from Charlie Cameron, followed by a quick major from Zac Bailey. Morris then marked strongly to put the Lions ahead before scoring again to extend the lead. Morris and Cameron shared six goals, helping Brisbane convert a match that appeared to be slipping away into another premiership. The teams were level at 43 points at halftime after Fremantle disrupted Brisbane’s play in the opening half.
