Steve Borthwick is set to receive a contract extension as England head coach, with the Rugby Football Union planning to keep him in the role until after the 2028 Six Nations. This move is intended to provide stability and certainty for the team heading into the Rugby World Cup next year in Australia, while also allowing the RFU time to assess his long-term future based on the tournament's outcome. RFU director of performance Conor O'Shea stated that the extension is designed to prevent coaches from facing job uncertainty during the crucial World Cup period. "You don't want them looking for a job going into a World Cup," O'Shea said. "Everyone knows it will be judged on the World Cup, but you can't have a group of coaches going in with that uncertainty, especially when you look at the timing. So we will give that certainty, and that will give us time to look properly." While Borthwick's current contract concludes after the 2027 World Cup, the RFU's decision stops short of offering him a long-term commitment beyond that.
