Boko Haram Faction Took 90% of Nigeria's Ransom Payments
A new report reveals that a single faction of Boko Haram collected approximately 90 percent of all ransom money paid to kidnappers across Nigeria between July 2025 and June 2026, fundamentally reshaping the country's kidnapping crisis into a funding mechanism for an insurgency. The findings, published by the Lagos-based consultancy SBM Intelligence on August 27, 2026, indicate that the Jamaatu Ahlis Sunna Liddaawati Wal-Jihad (JAS) faction and its allied cells received 7.0015 billion naira from just eight recorded incidents, out of a national total of 7.779 billion naira paid in ransom during the period.
