Boehly and Walter sell Chelsea stakes to Clearlake Capital
Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have sold their respective 12.8% stakes in Chelsea Football Club to Clearlake Capital, granting the private equity firm full control of the Premier League team. The transaction, announced by the club on Wednesday, September 17, 2026, sees Boehly step down as chairman, ending his four-year association with the club he helped purchase from Roman Abramovich in 2022. The deal consolidates ownership under Clearlake, which previously held a 61.5% majority stake. Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, who also held a 12.8% share, will remain an important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group. The Financial Times reported that Boehly and Walter will receive approximately £950 million for their combined stakes, in a deal that values the club at around £5 billion including debt. Chelsea stated there will be no changes to day-to-day operations, leadership, or strategy following the transition. Clearlake cofounders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano said in a statement that their focus is to continue investing in the club's infrastructure, sporting performance, and player development.
