BJP leads Rajasthan urban local body elections as counting continues

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in the majority of Rajasthan's urban local body elections, according to official figures released on September 14, 2026. As counting progressed for councillor posts across 309 urban local bodies, the BJP had won 1,937 wards, while the Indian National Congress secured 1,646. Independent candidates won 1,040 wards, with smaller parties and alliances taking the remainder. The elections, held in two phases on September 9 and 11, determined control of 10,245 councillor seats. The results are being closely watched as a barometer of urban political sentiment ahead of the 2028 state assembly elections. In the state's 10 municipal corporations, the BJP is leading in five, the Congress in three, while Jodhpur is tied and independents dominate in Bharatpur. In the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, the state's largest civic body, the BJP has secured 63 wards compared to the Congress's 44 out of 120 declared results. The counting is ongoing for all 150 wards. Congress leaders have alleged discrepancies in some results and met with the Jaipur District Collector to raise concerns.
