Bitcoin Surges Above $85,000 as Short Squeeze and ETF Inflows Fuel Rally

Published 21 September 2026

Bitcoin surged above $85,000 on Monday, September 21, 2026, reaching its highest level since late January as a wave of short liquidations and renewed institutional buying fueled a sharp rally. The price climbed as high as $86,332, extending a recovery that began after the cryptocurrency absorbed the recent failure of the CLARITY Act and a Federal Reserve interest rate increase. The rally was significantly amplified by forced buying from short sellers. Data from CoinGlass showed over $780 million in crypto positions were liquidated in the 24 hours surrounding the move, with approximately $664 million coming from short positions. The single largest liquidation was an $11.29 million BTCUSDT order on Binance. This short squeeze created a feedback loop, where rising prices forced leveraged shorts to close their positions, adding further buy pressure. Institutional demand also returned. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted a combined $593 million in inflows on September 18 and 19, according to SoSoValue data. In a notable shift, Fidelity's FBTC fund accounted for $310 million of those inflows, outpacing BlackRock's IBIT, which has typically dominated flows.
