Billy Joel reveals brain surgery for NPH, improved function

Singer-songwriter Billy Joel has revealed he underwent brain surgery to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that prompted him to cancel his concert schedule. Joel, 77, stated that after being diagnosed with the rare disorder last year, he had a shunt implanted in his brain, which has since improved his memory, balance, and overall ability to function. Doctors advised Joel to stop performing live shows because the loud concerts were reportedly causing concussion-like symptoms and potentially damaging brain nerves or causing further loss of brain cells. This medical guidance led to the cancellation of his scheduled concerts in May 2025. A statement from Joel's team at the time indicated that the NPH had been exacerbated by recent performances, leading to issues with hearing, vision, and balance. Joel shared his experience on his SiriusXM show, The Billy Joel Channel, explaining that he initially hesitated to undergo the shunt implantation. However, after researching the procedure, he realized it could help improve his balance and memory.
