Bihar flood alert as Ganga river rises

Bihar remains on flood alert as the Ganga river and other waterways continue to rise, threatening 13 districts with inundation. The water level of the Ganga was expected to cross the highest flood mark at Gandhi Ghat in Patna on Thursday night, September 3, 2026, and at Hathidah in Mokama around noon on Friday, September 4, 2026, according to state disaster management officials. The rising waters follow heavy rainfall and flash floods in neighboring Nepal, which have caused significant destruction and loss of life. As of noon on September 3, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 1,252 deaths and approximately 4,216 people missing due to flash floods that began on August 26. In Bihar, residents in low-lying and riverine areas, including Nakta Diara, have been urged to remain alert and prepare for potential evacuation. Roads have been submerged, and water has entered homes in some areas, forcing residents to relocate with their families and livestock. Concerns have been raised about shortages of fodder and shelter for animals, as well as food and drinking water for affected populations.
