Betty McGuire, Growing Pains Actress, Dies at 100

Betty McGuire, a Broadway performer and television actress best known for playing Kate Malone on the ABC sitcom Growing Pains, died at 100 on October 8. Her representative or close family friend Keith Gerchak confirmed her death, which was attributed to natural causes. McGuire died at the Motion Picture Television Fund’s retirement community in Woodland Hills, California, according to reports citing Gerchak. McGuire played Kate Malone, the grandmother of the Seaver children, during the series’ seven-season run. She appeared in 12 episodes, portraying the mother of Maggie Seaver, played by Joanna Kerns. The role became her most familiar television part, though her career included guest appearances across several decades of television. Her credits included The Doris Day Show, Columbo, Charlie’s Angels, Hill Street Blues, Moonlighting, MacGyver, ER and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
