BCCI to bring IPL 2027 auction back to India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to bring the Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction back to India for the 2027 season, reversing a three-year trend of hosting the event overseas. The decision was made during an IPL Governing Council meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The move marks a shift from the recent pattern of holding the auction in international cities. After the 2023 auction was staged in Kochi, India, the subsequent three editions were held in Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi. The 2027 event will be a mini-auction, a smaller-scale player acquisition compared to a full mega auction. Sources familiar with the development indicated that the decision was heavily influenced by feedback from the IPL franchises. Several teams had expressed concerns about the logistical challenges and financial costs associated with sending their full delegations overseas for a mini-auction, which involves fewer players and a shorter schedule than a mega auction. The Governing Council reportedly took these concerns into account, particularly after observing the difficulties during the previous year's event in Abu Dhabi.
