Barton denied bail, trial adjourned to March 2027

Former footballer Joey Barton will remain in custody after a judge refused his bail application, with his trial for an alleged serious assault adjourned until March 2027. Barton, 44, appeared via video link from HMP Liverpool at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, September 7, 2026, where Judge David Potter denied a renewed bail request. Barton faces a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with an alleged incident involving Kevin Lynch, 51, on March 8, 2026. The alleged assault occurred at Fairway, Huyton, following a period of drinking together at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Mr. Lynch, a former nonleague football manager and founder of the special education school NexGen Academy, was reportedly found covered in blood and sustained serious injuries to his eye. The trial had originally been scheduled to begin last week, but was adjourned on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Defence counsel Tim Forte KC applied for the adjournment, citing the need to contact potential new witnesses, a request that prosecution counsel did not oppose. Judge Potter cited "intractable problems" making it impossible for proceedings to commence as planned.
