Barclays Staff Resist New Office Attendance Policy

Published 19 September 2026

Barclays is facing growing resistance from thousands of its employees after announcing stricter office attendance requirements. The bank plans to increase the mandatory in-office days from two to three per week for most staff starting in October 2026, with senior leaders expected to attend four days a week. This change affects a significant portion of the UK workforce, though the exact number of impacted employees has not been disclosed by the bank. Unite, the union representing approximately 36,000 Barclays employees, has organized an open letter signed by thousands of staff opposing the policy. The letter argues that the current hybrid model has contributed to strong financial results and improved customer service. Unite is demanding several concessions, including a one-off payment to offset increased commuting costs, exemptions for employees with commutes longer than 40 minutes or 35 miles, special allowances during school holidays, and greater flexibility for staff with caring responsibilities. The union has also called for expanded childcare support, such as vouchers and onsite facilities.
