Barcelona cancels World Cup tribute after police clash with fans

Published 28 August 2026

Barcelona canceled a planned ceremony to honor its eight Spanish World Cup-winning players before its home match against Athletic Club on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after a police incident involving Catalan independence flags at a previous game sparked political tensions. Instead of the tribute, a local group organized a display of the pro-independence Estelada flag inside Camp Nou stadium. The decision followed clashes between Spanish national police and Barcelona supporters before the team's season-opening 5-0 victory at Elche on Sunday, August 23. According to the club, police confiscated Estelada flags from fans and detained one supporter after he confronted officers.
