Bank unions propose three-day strike from September 28
Bank unions in India have proposed a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, 2026, potentially disrupting branch-based services across the country. The action, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), is aimed at pressing demands that include a five-day work week and improvements to pension benefits. The strike is scheduled to begin on a Monday and follows a weekend, with September 26 being the second Saturday and September 27 a Sunday. This timing could result in a continuous five-day period of limited or no branch operations for customers. The UFBU, which claims to represent approximately 90% of the banking workforce, had also observed a nationwide strike on September 11 over the same set of demands. In response to the planned action, major banks have issued advisories to customers. State Bank of India (SBI) has urged customers to complete essential branch-related transactions before the strike period and to rely on digital and alternative banking channels. The bank stated it is taking steps to maintain essential services but cautioned that branch operations could face limitations depending on employee participation.
