B.C. Elections Set for Overlapping October Voting Periods

British Columbia’s provincial election is scheduled for Oct. 24, a week after municipal general voting, leaving Elections BC to prepare for overlapping voting periods and address concerns about staffing, polling locations and possible voter confusion. Premier David Eby called the provincial election on Sept. 22, advancing a vote that would otherwise have been held later in the legislature’s term. Municipal general voting is scheduled for Oct. 17. Provincial advance voting is set for Oct. 16 to 21, so its first two days overlap with municipal advance voting, which begins Oct. 7, and its final day falls before municipal election day. Elections BC Chief Electoral Officer Shipra Verma said the agency needs to hire 17,000 workers to deliver the election at a level comparable to the previous provincial contest. She did not disclose how many workers had been hired so far. The agency is also securing locations for advance and final voting, Verma said, and is aiming for a similar number of advance-voting sites to the previous election, about 350. That is a target, not a confirmed count for 2026.
