Award-winning filmmaker R Sarath dies at 63

Renowned Malayalam filmmaker R Sarath died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 63. Sarath was recognized for his critically acclaimed films that often explored social, cultural, and environmental themes. His directorial debut, Sayahnam, released in 2000, garnered significant critical appreciation and won seven Kerala State Film Awards. The film, which addressed the issue of nuclear tests through the eyes of an aging writer and his scientist son, also earned him the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director and the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. Sarath's filmography includes other notable works such as Sthithi, Sheelabathi, and Buddhanum Chaplinum Chirikkunnu. His docufiction Bhoomikku Oru Charamageetham, a visual adaptation of a poem by ONV Kurup, also highlighted environmental concerns. His film The Desire A Journey of a Woman, an Indo-Chinese coproduction, received the award for Best Narrative Feature Film at the 2011 Geneva International Film Festival. His films frequently traveled to international film festivals. Beyond feature filmmaking, Sarath was also an accomplished mural art scholar.
