Australia Launches Bid for UN Security Council Seat

Australia has formally launched a bid for a nonpermanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029-2030 term, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing the campaign during the UN General Assembly in New York. The bid marks Australia's first attempt to secure a council position since its 2013-2014 term. Albanese stated that a seat would allow Australia to play a key role in shaping global responses to critical issues, including artificial intelligence regulation, child internet safety, and climate resilience for Pacific island nations. He emphasized that engagement with the world directly impacts the cost of living and quality of life for Australians. The election for the seat will be conducted by secret ballot among the 193 UN member states in 2028, requiring a two-thirds majority for victory. Australia is competing within the Western European and Others Group bloc, where Finland is the only other announced nominee so far, though other countries from the group could still enter the race. Albanese expressed confidence in securing strong support from Pacific island nations and Southeast Asian countries in the ASEAN bloc.
