Audi appeals Italian GP stewards' decision

Audi has announced its intention to appeal a decision by Formula 1 stewards that did not penalize driver Yuki Tsunoda following an incident during a restart at the Italian Grand Prix. The controversy centers on Tsunoda's positioning in his grid box at Monza, which led to an additional formation lap before the race resumed. During a red flag restart on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Tsunoda appeared to be out of position in his designated grid slot. The Race Director, citing discomfort with the car's placement, initiated an extra formation lap. According to Article B5.9.4 of the FIA Sporting Regulations, a driver who causes an additional formation lap is required to enter the pit lane and start the race from there. Tsunoda, however, returned to his grid position. Following an investigation, the FIA stewards decided to take no further action. They determined that the extra formation lap was initiated by the Race Director's assessment of the situation, rather than being directly caused by Tsunoda.
