Audacity 4.0 Released With New UI and Editing

Published 4 September 2026

Audacity 4.0, a significant overhaul of the widely used open-source audio editor, has been released, introducing a modernized interface and fundamental changes to its editing workflow. The update, which became available on September 3, 2026, aims to transform the application from a functional but dated tool into a more powerful and intuitive creative platform. The most substantial change is the adoption of a nondestructive editing model. This allows users to trim audio clips and later recover the original material by simply extending the clip's edge. Clips can now overlap, enabling easier arrangement and adjustment of audio segments. Previously, users had to cut and paste to move clips past existing audio, but the new system allows for direct dragging and manipulation of clips on the timeline. This shift brings Audacity closer to the functionality found in professional digital audio workstations. Beyond workflow enhancements, Audacity 4.0 features a completely redesigned user interface, built using the Qt6 toolkit. This transition brings improved high-definition display scaling, support for light and dark modes, and the ability to follow system accent colors.
