ArtCraft expands free Adobe and Office alternatives
Brandon Thomas has released a set of free, open-source applications designed to reproduce core functions of software from Adobe and Microsoft, extending his ArtCraft project from creative tools to office programs. The apps include PhotoCraft, an image editor modeled on Photoshop, and WordCraft, DeckCraft and GridCraft, counterparts to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Thomas, a software engineer, says he used Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 artificial-intelligence model and the Rust programming language to develop the applications. He has described the Adobe-like products as cleanroom reimplementations built using publicly available file-format specifications, rather than Adobe’s proprietary source code. That account has not been independently verified in the supplied reporting. The project’s office applications are also open source. ArtCraft’s descriptions say WordCraft can work with several document formats, while DeckCraft is intended to match PowerPoint’s features. One report says WordCraft is designed to run on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, as well as in a browser.
