Arsenal spend £199.5m on transfers to defend Premier League title

Arsenal will begin their 2026/27 Champions League campaign as reigning Premier League champions, aiming to improve upon last season's final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The club, which won all eight of its league phase matches last season, has been drawn in the competition and will see its knockout stage begin with playoffs in February 2027. The final is scheduled for June 5, 2027, at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid. To bolster their squad for a dual challenge in Europe and domestically, Arsenal completed a significant summer transfer window, spending approximately £199.5 million. The club's record signing, midfielder Bruno Guimarães, joined from Newcastle United for £75 million. He was joined by defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £55 million, forward Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34 million, and goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds United. Defender Piero Hincapié's loan from Bayer Leverkusen was also made permanent for £34.5 million. The spending was offset by sales totaling around £116.6 million. The most significant departure was forward Gabriel Martinelli, who set a new club record sale by joining Al Hilal for £55.7 million.
