Apple Watch Live Rewind feature raises privacy concerns

Apple has introduced a new feature for its latest smartwatches that transcribes the last 15 seconds of audio, prompting immediate privacy discussions about the potential for covert surveillance. The feature, called Live Rewind, is part of the Audio Intelligence suite debuting on the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, which were announced at the company's Surprise and Shine event on September 10, 2026. Live Rewind is activated by a double-press of the Digital Crown, displaying a text transcription of recent speech on the watch face. Apple designed the tool to help users recall missed details from conversations. However, its continuous audio processing has raised concerns that the device could be used to record others without consent. In response, Apple has emphasized built-in safeguards intended to prevent secret use. According to the company, activating Live Rewind triggers an audible chime from the watch's speaker, even if the device is in silent mode or headphones are connected. A full-screen animation and microphone indicator also appear on the display. Apple states these measures are designed to alert those nearby that the feature has been activated.
