Apple Seeds iOS 27.2 Beta 2 With Hidden Anti Theft Feature

Apple seeded the second iOS 27.2 developer beta on September 21, 2026, about a week after the first beta and roughly a week after the public release of iOS 27.0. Registered developers can download the build through Settings, General, Software Update, with an equivalent public beta expected to follow shortly afterward. While the update shows minimal user-facing changes on the surface, code inspection has surfaced several unannounced features. The most notable is an anti-snatching capability internally called AutoLock, which appears designed to lock an iPhone when it detects signs of theft. According to code analysis, the feature could trigger on signals such as sharp acceleration consistent with a phone being grabbed, loss of connectivity to a paired Apple Watch, an unreachable Apple Watch, prolonged loss of network activity, or the device remaining unlocked for an extended period. The code also references safeguards against false positives, including successful biometric authentication and certain ordinary app activities. Other code discoveries point to additions across Apple's software stack.
