APC Demands Obi Quit Race Over Anambra Debt Records

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has demanded that 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi withdraw from the race, citing newly released financial records from the Anambra State Government that it says contradict his long-standing claim of leaving the state without debt. In a statement issued Monday, September 21, 2026, the council's spokesperson, Dele Alake, said disclosures by the state government had "torn to shreds" the "facade of falsehood" built around Obi's tenure as governor. The controversy stems from records released by the Anambra State Government in response to Obi's own challenge to verify his record. According to the state government, Obi's administration contracted external loans totaling $123.77 million between 2007 and 2013. It stated that eight of these borrowings remained outstanding when Obi left office on March 17, 2014, with projects including malaria control, erosion management, education, and healthcare. The government further reported that the outstanding balance on these loans stood at $92.35 million, or approximately N127.4 billion, as of June 30, 2026.
