Antonelli wins Spanish Grand Prix after VSC costs Norris

Kimi Antonelli won the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit on Sunday, extending his Formula 1 championship lead after a race decided by a crucial Virtual Safety Car period. The Mercedes driver secured his eighth victory of the season, finishing 4.3 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, with polesitter Lando Norris relegated to third. Norris had controlled the early stages from pole position, building a lead of over six seconds. However, the race turned on lap 15 when Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stopped at Turn 20, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. Norris had just passed the pit entry when the caution was deployed, while Antonelli, Verstappen, and George Russell were able to make their pit stops under the reduced speed conditions. McLaren called Norris in on the following lap, but the Virtual Safety Car period ended as he approached the pit lane. A slow stop further compounded the issue, and Norris emerged in fifth place behind Charles Leclerc, who had not pitted. Leclerc would lead the race until lap 49 before making his only stop, handing the net lead back to Antonelli.
