Anglican Synod Urges Peaceful Elections, Condemns Hate Speech

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has issued a public appeal for peaceful and issue-focused elections, condemning hate speech and violence as Nigeria prepares for its 2027 general elections. The call was made in a communique released at the conclusion of the Church's 15th General Synod, which convened in Ogun State. The synod, attended by 142 bishops, 199 clergy, and 145 laity representatives, urged political leaders, parties, and citizens to prioritize national unity and collective welfare above partisan interests. The communique stated that political disagreements should never justify hatred or violence and called on all stakeholders to condemn intimidation, vote-buying, and misinformation. The Church specifically tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with maintaining neutrality, transparency, and credibility in administering the polls. It also encouraged the judiciary to preserve its integrity by exercising independent judgment in election-related disputes. The synod expressed deep concern over persistent security threats, including banditry and abductions, and urged authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens.
