Android Adds Direct Password and Passkey Transfers

Google has introduced a new system-level feature for Android that allows users to transfer passwords and passkeys directly between password manager apps, eliminating the need to download files during the switch. The company announced the feature on Thursday, describing it as a more secure alternative to the traditional export process. Previously, moving credentials between password managers required exporting them into an unencrypted CSV text file stored on the device. Google said that approach left sensitive logins exposed if the file was not promptly deleted, creating risks from unauthorized access or malware. Passkeys, the passwordless sign-in credentials stored inside password managers, could not be transferred at all, forcing users to manually recreate them across individual sites and apps when switching providers. The new transfer flow begins inside the password manager a user is switching to. After selecting the option to import or copy credentials from another provider, the app hands the task to Android, which detects compatible password managers installed on the device and presents a list of supported sources.
